There is a temptation, when confronted with a long and brutal conflict, to assume that history will eventually do what politics cannot. Time will pass. Passions will cool. Atrocity will exhaust itself. A society consumed by fear and vengeance will one day awaken, look upon the wreckage, and ask how it allowed itself to go so far.
