Russia told its citizens to avoid travel to Iran and urged those already there to leave Iran and the neighboring countries, amid reports that Washington had pressed Moscow to bring Tehran to a new round of talks.¹ The warning followed a meeting in the Kremlin on Thursday 5 November, shown in TASS footage, at which Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council and the representative of Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei, handed Vladimir Putin a letter from Khamenei, with the Kremlin's foreign policy aide Yuri Ushakov and the GRU chief, Igor Kostyukov, at the table.² Pepe Escobar said Putin had already spoken to Rezaei by phone for 95 minutes earlier in the week and pledged full support.³
The warning arrived with other signals. The New York Times reported that the United States and Israel hold plans for a short, intensive operation against Iran's energy infrastructure, nuclear facilities and missile and drone arsenal.⁴ Iraq's nuclear regulator said emergency response plans and border radiation monitoring are in place over possible US strikes on Iranian nuclear sites, with airspace restrictions from 7 to 11 November.⁵ Pete Hegseth, whose job Trump was reported to be weighing, said that when Washington says Iran will not have a nuclear weapon, it means it.⁶ Pulling the other way, Axios reported, citing a US official, that the USS Theodore Roosevelt is scheduled for a several-day port call in Singapore, which defers its carrier group to the middle or end of November.⁷ The Nasdaq fell 5.5 percent in a day, its worst fall since 2020, with South Korea's Kospi down about 7 percent and the Nikkei about 6.5 percent; Nate of Canadian Prepper reads the selloff as a sign that "somebody knows that day X is coming."⁸
Laith Marouf treats the Russian alert as the clearest signal of the day. "The last time Russia made an alert like this to its citizens, it was less than 24 hours before the 40-day war was launched on Iran," he said, and "whatever happened in that meeting indicates that there is a war coming."⁹ He expects the full war to resume within a day or two, once a third US carrier reaches the Arabian Sea.¹⁰ Nate of Canadian Prepper, who flagged both the Iraqi notice and the Roosevelt's delay, argues that the diplomacy is itself the warning: "right when they start talking about peace, that's when you know war is imminent, because that's how these guys operate."¹¹ He does not expect the operation to succeed against a dispersed and better-prepared Iran, and expects a very long war instead.¹² Escobar gives Trump less than two months before the new Congress sits and expects him to use them, probably including a resumption of the war in the next few days.¹³ The push, in his account, comes from Jerusalem: "Netanyahu, it is well known, has been begging Trump to start the war," because a war spares him from forming a new government.¹⁴ Joe Kent expects Israel to press Trump for heavy strikes before the new Congress sits and, if that fails, to hit Iranian civilian infrastructure itself to draw the United States back in: "my guess is they're going to try both." American involvement in the war, he said, is existential for Israel.¹⁵

“The last time Russia made an alert like this to its citizens, it was less than 24 hours before the 40-day war was launched on Iran.”
Tehran has not moved. Rezaei called Vice President Vance's letter unsatisfactory,¹⁶ and posted on X that the American response did not satisfy Iran's demands and that Washington must act on Iran's seven conditions. Marouf said Russia sent several envoys to Iran over six days and that Tehran refused face-to-face talks until the seven-point memorandum of understanding is implemented.¹⁷ Escobar expects Moscow and Beijing to offer Trump one last off-ramp on the same terms: "It's the memorandum of understanding diplomacy or nothing."¹⁸ Parliament speaker Ghalibaf answered Vance's post-election post with a jibe about "losing gambler energy."¹⁹ If the bombing resumes, Escobar says, Iran has a list of 400 targets ready and the response would be brutal.²⁰

Larry Johnson looks at the same week and sees no strike. The midterm rout leaves Trump a hamstrung lame duck facing a Senate that can block cabinet nominations and military promotions, and a party in which, he says, most of the Republicans who survived recognize they are better off if Trump is gone.²¹ "I think all this mitigates against any immediate strike by the United States," he said, while allowing that it could change overnight.²² He adds a military reason for caution: Chinese Beidou and Russian GLONASS data have made Iran's missiles precise, and US ships are at risk.²³ Robert Barnes puts kinetic action against Iran at even odds over the next 30 days, down from highly likely before the election results,²⁴ and says the weight of opinion across the bureaucracy, the military chain of command, Congress and the White House "is exit, not escalation."²⁵ Douglas Macgregor ties the timing to the carriers: "Until you have three carrier battle groups on station, this air and missile offensive is not likely to begin." Asked whether Trump goes back to war in a next phase, he expects he will.²⁶ John Mearsheimer puts the question to the whole premise: "If this is a war-winning strategy, why did President Trump wait until after the election to employ it?" His answer is that no war-winning option exists, which is why none has been used.²⁷
Johnson's larger point is that the timing of the next strike matters less than the damage already done. Even if the war ends tomorrow, he says, the 20 percent of the world's crude supply lost to the Gulf will not return for at least two years, the Strategic Petroleum Reserve has been drawn to critical levels, and by 2028 the United States and the world will be in recession, possibly depression.²⁸

Eisenkot's inquiry vote, Kiev's whistleblowers charged, and AIPAC's $55 million in losing races
Israel's new Knesset meets on Monday 9 November, and Alastair Crooke expects Gadi Eisenkot to win a majority for an inquiry into Netanyahu over October 7: "I haven't the numbers, but my best guess is he will get a majority for that, because the Arab parties will certainly support that."²⁹ Israel's Channel 12 reported Eisenkot striking a deal with Avigdor Liberman and the ultra-Orthodox parties for a coalition of about 69 seats.³⁰ Marouf expects no such government, only six months of coalition limbo and then a new election.³¹
Ukrainian security services have charged a medic and two others who exposed a secret Azov-run detention site near Kiev and evacuated tortured detainees; they face up to eight years, Daniel Davis reported.³² Mark Sleboda: "the only ones who are facing any criminal charges or trial or anything over this, of course, is the people who exposed this."³³ Alexander Mercouris expects the US-Russia-Ukraine talks in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday 10 November to fail: "the talks in Abu Dhabi are going to go nowhere."³⁴ Russia, he said, is now systematically and methodically destroying Ukraine's electricity generating system.³⁵
Eli Clifton of the Quincy Institute counted the cost of AIPAC's midterm. Its super PAC, United Democracy Project, spent more than $84 million, and $55.3 million of it went into losing races, including more than $22 million against Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan, who won anyway. The money, Clifton said, did not swing the races in which the group was most deeply invested.³⁶ He still expects Trump to restart the war before the Democrats take power, possibly with a strike on Pickaxe Mountain.³⁷
