Chas Freeman
Ambassador Chas W. Freeman Jr. is a retired career US diplomat who served as principal interpreter for President Nixon’s 1972 China visit, then as US Ambassador to Saudi Arabia during the 1990-91 Gulf War, and later as Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Affairs. A foreign-policy realist associated with the restraint tradition, he now writes and speaks on US strategy toward the Middle East, China, and Russia, mostly as an interview guest.
